Sugar Cravings and PMS
You maybe crave sweets and starchy foods some time of certain month. According to the JRM ( Journal of Reproductive Medicine ), it is showing that women who have some PMS symptoms can take 3 times the amount of sugar as those who have not got these symptoms and signs.
The hormone serotonin is driving these changes. One way to make serotonin is to eat carbs — hence the sugar cravings; however, sugar is a double edged sword. Too much sugar causes our insulin levels to spike which in turn affects other hormones.
In particular, excessive insulin in women stimulates the follicles in the ovaries to overproduce testosterone instead of progesterone. With no progesterone, eggs don’t mature and they become cysts. The end result is infertility and irregular periods — a painful condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS.
Other symptoms of PCOS are weight gain, acne, oily hair, and sexual dysfunction.
The right foods can help with cravings, but more importantly decreasing your sugar intake can have a profound effect. Of course this is easier said than done. We all know the power of a glazed donut. Sugar has been compared to heroin in terms of its addictive qualities.

I’m also learning about emotional eating and the triggers that that cause me to have those cravings for sweets — something I’ve struggled with my whole life. This is so different from going to the doctor and getting a prescription. It’s dealing with the root cause and forcing me to evaluate my habits and take responsibility for my health.
